Educators in Buenos Aires Protest Against Policies

The Secretary General of the Teacher Association of Secondary and Higher Education of Buenos Aires City (ADEMYS), Mariana Scayola, explained that they are participating in the strike because they believe that the policies of President Javier Milei directly affect salaries and the education budget. In an intervention on Radio Splendid, Scayola emphasized that they are also calling for a general strike in the coming days and noted that, despite the stance of the National Government, it is losing social support.

According to Scayola, the educational reform proposed by Milei will worsen the situation of the education system and generate a reaction in sectors that have supported the Government, manifesting themselves in the streets due to the growing social dissatisfaction with the adjustment situation. The reasons that aggravate the loss of purchasing power of teachers include the demand for the restitution of the National Teacher Incentive Fund, which used to be an essential part of their income, the increase in the education budget, and the call for collective bargaining.

Union representatives believe that all these measures are crucial to counteract the National Government's attempt at the 'commodification' of education. Additionally, they demand the allocation of resources to the Social Security Institute (IPS), as this directly affects teachers' pensions, as well as a salary restructuring for university staff and funds that guarantee the proper functioning of higher education institutions.
